Gerd Arens, born in 1943, is a German designer and artist, co-founder of the Pentagon group in Cologne in 1985 with Wolfgang Laubersheimer, Reinhard Müller, Ralph Sommer, and Detlef Meyer-Voggenreiter. This collective, tied to Neues Deutsches Design, shaped the 1980s with postmodern creations blending art and design, using metal, plexiglass, and neon. Arens, a neon master, created iconic pieces like the Kronleuchter Pentagon (1986) for documenta 8 and the Arc Lamp (1990). The group, dissolved in 1991, was celebrated in 2020 with a retrospective at the Cologne Museum of Applied Arts. Arens is also an architect and winemaker.
