Gustave Stoskopf (1869-1944), born in Brumath, was a versatile Alsatian artist: painter, playwright, poet, and journalist. Trained in Paris and Munich, he excelled in realistic portraits of Alsatian peasants, exhibited in Strasbourg, Colmar, and Paris. Co-founder of the Alsatian Theater of Strasbourg, he wrote D’r Herr Maire (1898), a successful dialect comedy adapted for film and television. As director of the Strassburger Neue Zeitung, he promoted Alsatian culture. A poet, he published Luschtig’s üs’m Elsass. A member of the Alsatian Museum, he championed regional identity. He died in Brumath, and his work is celebrated at the Gustave-Stoskopf Museum.
