Trained in Paris and Munich, he excelled in realistic portraits of Alsatian peasants, exhibited in Strasbourg, Colmar, and Paris. Co-founder of the Alsatian Theater of Strasbourg, he wrote D\u2019r Herr Maire (1898), a successful dialect comedy adapted for film and television. As director of the Strassburger Neue Zeitung, he promoted Alsatian culture. A poet, he published Luschtig\u2019s \u00fcs\u2019m Elsass. A member of the Alsatian Museum, he championed regional identity.
